Because of limited range of a camera's built-in flash, external flash is needed for extended range. Most point and shoot digital cameras don't equip with hot shoe for external flash, slave flash becomes the only choice.
In some scenes, such as fashion show in a hall, or school graduation ceremony, there will be many people use flashes. Those flashes can cause misfires of slave units. To solve the problem. I built an optical cable linking the built-in flash of the camera and the slave sensor head.
Material
2 x 22mm suction cups
2 x rubber bands
Up to 24" Tygon tubing R-3603, 1/8"ID, 1/4" OD.
Crazy glue
Tools
Cutter
Method
1. Cut a small slot on the rubber band so that the tubing can pass through it.
2. Attach the tubing to the suction cup using crazy glue. Done!
Covering the sensor head with black tape will further improve the immunity against other flashes.
Selection of tubing
You can try another material of tubing as long as it conducts light well. Not all plastic tubing can be used for this project. The following is a simple test if a tubing conducts light.
1. Cut a piece of tubing of, say, 12".
2. Illuminate one end with a white LED flash and check if any light coming out from the other end.
