DIY Pan and Tilt Unit with Wired Remote Control

Last time I posted the tutorial for the Remote Control on shutter lease, focusing and zoom with the mouse mod. This tutorial shows you the Pan and Tilt unit with remote control and remote range finder. The complete system is shown in the following diagram.

Choice of equipment:

1.  The camera - must have video out feature. Already modified to have the remote control function (See DIY Remote Control).

2.  The LCD monitor - must have the video input terminal. The one from a dual screen DVD player is a good candidate.

3.  Pan and tilt controller - modified from a joy stick style controller. It must be self-centered off and the switches can carry the motor current (say, 0.8Amp).

4.  The pan drive unit - any drive unit from a toy car which powered by 3V will do the job.

5.  The tilt drive unit - any linear drive can be tried. I used the linear drive from a CDROM. Its motor is not powerful enough. I replaced the motor with one from a toy car which powered by 3V. It works pretty well.

6.  Video cables - 10m of video extension cable.

7.  Control cable between the camera and the mouse - 10m of Ethernet network cable.

8.  Control cable for the pan and tilt drives - 10m of 3-core power cable, each core is of 18 AWG.

9.  The rotating platform - Any rotating disc can be tried. I used an old hard drive.

10.  Camera mount - To minimize the machine work, I used a mount head from a mini tripod.

11.  Battery packs (not shown in the above diagram) - My LCD monitor needs 12V, 0.3A. The pan and tilt drives need 3V.

Construction

The hard drive is used as a rotating platform. other irrelevant parts are to be removed.

Pan drive unit is glued to the hard drive body.

The hard drive body is mounted on a hinge so that it can be tilted up and down.

The complete pan and tilt drives. The close-up for the tilt unit is shown in the next 2 pictures.
